In July of 2021 Normal Heights lost the Vera House community garden when the lot was sold for the construction of a new home, leaving neighbors few options to grow their own food.
A community garden is being built at the south end of Ward Canyon Neighborhood Park by the community in cooperation with the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. The garden will be authorized on a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). The permit will be for three years with the option to renew.
When completed, amenities will include 28 garden plots, 9 waist-level garden boxes, compost and trash areas, a tool shed, running water, ADA compliant graded paths, and a native/pollinator plant garden. The existing pergola and bench will be retained.
